Karl Espenberg

Karl Espenberg (* 4th August July / 15 August  1761 greg. In Hõbeda , then parish Haljala , Estonia ; † 7 July July / 19 July 1822 greg. In Huuksi , then parish Peetri , Estonia) was a German Baltic Doctor, researcher and explorer.

Karl (also Carl ) Espenberg attended school in the Estonian capital Tallinn (German Reval ). He first studied at the University of Jena , and later medicine in Halle . Espenberg completed his medical studies at the University of Erlangen . There he obtained his doctorate in 1796. med. with his work De febris mercurialis efficacia in sananda lue venerea .

In 1797 Espenberg returned to Estonia, where he became a family doctor for the von Krusenstern family. The Baltic German captain and explorer Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770–1846) invited Espenberg to accompany him as a ship's doctor on his circumnavigation , which lasted from 1803 to 1806. Espenberg accepted the offer. The main aim of the expedition was to investigate the areas on the northwest coast of America that were then part of Russia and to establish trade connections with Japan .

Espenberg's impressions and research are printed in Krusenstern's travel reports. They appeared in three volumes from 1809 to 1812.

After his return to the Baltic States , Espenberg established himself as a private doctor in Tallinn . When his health deteriorated, he moved to the countryside in Järva County ( Jerwen ). Espenberg was buried in the cemetery of Peetri ( St. Petri ) after his death in 1822 .

Geographical names

Karl Espen Berg was in Alaska the Cape Espenberg at the mouth of Kotzebue Sound waterfront in the Chukchi Sea named. A mountain in the north of the Sakhalin Peninsula also bears his name.
