Karl Eszterházy , also Karl Esterhazy and Károly Eszterházy de Galantha (born May 4, 1725 in Pressburg , † March 15, 1799 in Erlau ), was a Hungarian Roman Catholic bishop .
Life
Karl Eszterházy came from the Esterházy magnate family . His father was Count Ferenc Esterházy von Galántha (1683–1754), his mother Mária Szidonia Pálffy from Erdõd (1690–1743), a daughter of the imperial field marshal Johann Pálffy .
Eszterházy embarked on a spiritual career and was ordained a priest in 1748 . After being appointed bishop of Waitzen (Vác), he received episcopal ordination in 1760 . In Vác he initiated the new construction of the Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Michael . But in 1762 he was appointed bishop of Erlau (Eger in Hungary), where he held office until his death. He founded and endowed numerous churches and monasteries and was considered a highly educated art connoisseur. In Erlau he had Jakob Fellner build the lyceum, today the Karl Eszterházy University . The present shape of Esterházy Castle and the large St. Stephen's Church in Pápa go back to him.
