St. Stephan

history

A previous building is mentioned in 1225 as the central church for the localities in the area of today's city of Pápa. At the beginning of the 15th century, Palatine Nikolaus Garai renewed the church at the same time as the construction of the neighboring fortified castle. From the Reformation to 1732, St. Stephen's Church was Protestant . In the 17th century the castle became the property of the Esterházy family , who replaced it in the 18th century with today's baroque palace. Bishop Karl Eszterházy was the lord of the castle here from 1760 . He had the dilapidated church torn down and donated the new building, for which he won leading artists of the Habsburg monarchy . There is a statue of the bishop of László Marton by the church .

Ceiling fresco by Franz Anton Maulbertsch: Heavenly vision and arrest of St. Stephen

St. Stephen's Church shows the straightforward forms of Louis-seize , which lead to classicism . The portal facade with the two 72 m high bell towers faces southeast towards the city center. It is dominated by a strictly geometric triangular gable. It is crowned with a statue of the church patron Stephanus between two kneeling angels.

The 42 m long church hall is divided into the nave and the somewhat narrower rectangular choir . The nave is vaulted inside by two, the choir is vaulted by a flat dome, which are separated from each other by belt arches .

A spacious crypt extends under the church , in which members of the Esterházy family as well as nobles and leading citizens of Pápa are buried.

Furnishing

The equipment is of high quality and comes from important carvers, painters and stonemasons of the Habsburg monarchy. Thematically, the figure of the protomartyr Stephen is the focus. The three dome frescos by Maulbertsch show in moving compositions rich in figures the ordination of Stephen ( Acts 6.5–6  EU ), his speech in front of the Sanhedrin ( Acts 7.2–53  EU ) and - in the choir - his vision of the open sky and his removal for execution ( Acts 7.54–56  EU ). The high altar retable by Hubert Maurer depicts Stephen's stoning and death ( Acts 7.58–60  EU ).

The first side altar on the left is dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo , the patron saint of Karl Eszterházy. The altarpiece shows the saint giving communion to a person suffering from the plague, behind him Bishop Eszterházy. The pulpit was made by the Bohemian sculptor Philip Jakob Prokop (1740–1814) from 1781 to 1795.
