Karl Friedrich Brentano

Karl Friedrich Brentano (born December 8, 1822 in Laufenburg ; † October 30, 1894 there ; entitled to live in Laufenburg) was a Swiss politician and judge . From 1859 to 1885 he was Councilor of the Canton of Aargau .

biography

The son of the district administrator Kasimir Brentano attended the canton school in Aarau . He then studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau . In Heidelberg he joined the Corps Suevia . In 1846 he received his doctorate , returned to Laufenburg and worked for the next ten years as a district administrator. In 1846 Brentano was elected to the Grand Council ; He belonged to this in 1852 and again from 1856 to 1859 and from 1885 until his death. In 1848 he was admitted to the bar.

In 1859 the Great Council elected Brentano to the cantonal government. At first he was in charge of the police department until 1863, then the justice department until 1868. During this time the Lenzburg penal institution was established , and he made a significant contribution to its organization. From 1868 to 1872 he headed the finance department, until 1876 again the justice department and until 1880 the state economic department. From 1880 to 1885 he was head of the Justice Department a third time, but then resigned after the government was downsized. He then presided over the district court of Laufenburg until his death.

As a member of the government, Brentano was ex officio from 1868 on the board of directors of the Swiss Northeast Railway and from 1880 on the board of directors of the Aargauische Bank (forerunner of the cantonal bank ). During the Kulturkampf he was together with Augustin Keller at the head of the Catholic Church Council of the Canton of Aargau from 1872 to 1876 .
