Karl Friedrich Kerner (* 12. March 1847 in Cuxhaven , † 7. March 1920 in Rostock ) was a German hydraulic engineering - engineering and construction officer, Mr , who has made as a port building director for water projects in Rostock deserves. From 1886 he was in charge of the expansion of the Warnemünde ferry port for the connection to Gedser .

Life

Karl Friedrich Kerner was the son of a hydraulic engineering inspector and, after graduating from high school in Hamburg , attended the Hanover Polytechnic from 1866 . From 1867 he studied at the Berlin Building Academy . After the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War , Kerner interrupted his studies in 1870 and enlisted in the military as a one-year volunteer , where he later served in the replacement battalion of the Kaiser-Alexander-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment . At the end of the war he continued his studies in 1871 and was then employed in the port renovation in Hamburg. As an employee of the Altona building inspection, Karl Friedrich Kerner was in charge of the bank reinforcement work on the Elbe River between Altona and Stade . In 1872 he passed the first state examination (construction manager examination). After his transfer to the Elbstrom construction management in 1874, he worked on canal and lock work in the Middle Emsian moor and in the renovation of the large Ems weir in Listrup . In 1877 Karl Friedrich Kerner passed the second state examination (master builder examination).

In 1885, Kerner was hired as port construction director for the city of Rostock and led the renovation of the Warnow lock on Mühlendamm. In 1886, under his leadership, the first major renovation of the Warnemünde harbor began for steamship traffic to Gedser in Denmark . He was responsible for various bank and port structures in Rostock and Warnemünde, but other municipal facilities were also subordinate to him, such as the Rostock waterworks and the urban road and sluice structures. Karl Friedrich Kerner was also the director of the fire department .

In 1897 the construction of the Warnemünde lighthouse began , which was completed in 1898. From 1900 to 1903 the second renovation of the Warnemünde harbor took place to introduce rail ferry services to Denmark - the Warnemünde – Gedser route was built under the direction of Kerner. In 1907, work began on the alluvial sewer system in Rostock. In 1913 the watercourse of the Warnow was relocated in front of the Petritor and a new construction of the Petri Bridge became necessary to enable both road and rail traffic. A bascule bridge was built for this.

In 1915 Karl Friedrich Kerner was retired due to illness.

Honors

In 2010 a street in Warnemünde was named after Karl Friedrich Kerner. In 1909 he received the Order of the Griffin and the Dannebrogden . He carried the title of Privy Building Councilor .
