Karl Frielingsdorf

Karl Frielingsdorf SJ (born February 23, 1933 in Düren ; † May 25, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German Jesuit , religious educator and pastoral psychologist .

Life

Karl Frielingsdorf began studying law in Cologne after graduating from high school in 1952 and joined the Jesuit order in 1953. From 1956 to 1959 he studied philosophy at the Berchmanskolleg of the Jesuits in Pullach (now University of Philosophy in Munich ) and from 1961 to 1965 theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main. This was followed by further studies at the Institut Supérieur de Pastorale Catéchétique (ISPC) in Paris and in pedagogy and psychology at the Institute for Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Psychology in Innsbruck , at the Catechetical Institute of the University of Munich and at the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt am Main. In 1969 he was awarded a doctorate degree at the University of Trier with a thesis on "The Doctrine of God in the Catechisms of the Enlightenment" (published as On the Way to a New Understanding of God ). theol. PhD. In 1972 he completed his habilitation at the Jesuit University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main with a paper on group dynamics aspects of religious education and theology studies (title: Learning in groups ) and received the Venia legendi in religious education and pastoral psychology.

In 1974 Frielingsdorf was appointed to the professorship for religious education and pastoral psychology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen. From 1975 to 1985 he was also a lecturer at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 2001 he retired. In 2004 he handed over the management of the Institute for Pastoral Psychology and Spirituality, of which he was the founder and long-term director, to Klaus Kießling .

Act

Frielingsdorf was committed to the education and training of priests and clergy as well as employees in pastoral and pastoral service. He was a co-founder and longstanding board member of the German Society for Pastoral Psychology. With a publication on the situation of pastoral psychology in Germany, he first addressed the related subject of psychology and theology in 1974. He is regarded as the founder of the key method, a psychotherapeutic method related to systemic family therapy.

In the standard work The Psychology of the 20th Century , Karl Frielingsdorf is named as one of the “leading representatives in the reconciliation between psychology and theology”. He has published numerous papers and scientific articles.
