Christian Karl Hackenschmidt (also Christian Charles Hackenschmidt; born March 14, 1839 in Strasbourg ; † November 11, 1915 ibid) was an Alsatian Evangelical Lutheran pastor and theologian.

Life

Karl Hackenschmidt was the son of the basket weaver and poet Johannes Christian Hackenschmidt and his wife Louise Urban. He attended high school in Strasbourg. From 1857 to 1861 he studied Protestant theology in Strasbourg . In 1857 he and Friedrich August Ihme were one of the founders of the Argentina Wingolf connection to Strasbourg. He completed his studies in Erlangen in 1862 with a thesis on Lutheran dogmatics , where he also became a member of the Erlangen Wingolf . He was ordained on October 23, 1864 . In 1869 he received his doctorate in Strasbourg with the thesis Études sur la doctrine chrétienne du péché ( Studies on the Christian dogma of sin ).

Hackenschmidt was vicar in Ingwiller from 1864 to 1868 . He then became a private tutor in Froeschwiller and went on a study trip to Paris and Germany . From 1870 to 1882 he was pastor in Jaegerthal , from 1882 to 1885 prison pastor in Strasbourg. He then became a pastor at Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune protestant (Jung-St-Peter Protestant), which he remained until his death. From 1909 to 1915 he was also president of the parish consistory . Theologically, Hackenschmidt developed in the course of his life from a strictly denominational Lutheran to a "right-wing ritschlian ".

Hackenschmidt was considered one of the pioneers of Germanism in the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . The University of Strasbourg awarded him an honorary theological doctorate in 1896 . Nevertheless, according to Siegwalt, at the time that Strasbourg belonged to the German Empire, he was denied a chair at the University of Strasbourg because he was "too German".

Hackenschmidt was married to Emilie Baranowska since June 30, 1871. Her daughter was the artist Sabine Hackenschmidt (1873–1939).
