Karl Heinrich Doetsch

Karl Henry Doetsch (* 4. October 1910 in Kaldenhausen in Krefeld ; † 13. July 2003 in Braunschweig ) was a German aircraft - engineer and university professor .

Life

Karl Heinrich Doetsch studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University , where he also began flying. He trained as a master flight engineer with Otto Fuchs in Berlin. In 1936 he took over the management of the "flight characteristics" department in Berlin- Adlerhof at the German Aviation Research Institute . He dealt with the research and recording of flight characteristics, which was still in its infancy at the time. In 1943 he received his doctorate in this field at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg .

Doetsch developed the flight characteristics guidelines. The projectile of the Messerschmitt Me 262 had too much dispersion due to yaw vibrations . To do this, he invented a regulator, a " yaw damper ".

After the war he was brought to England to the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in Farnborough . Here he was later transferred to head the Controls Division, where he was involved in the development of the Concorde .

In 1961 he followed the call of the TH Braunschweig , where he became full professor and director of the Institute for Flight Guidance and the DFL Institute of the same name . (The DFL later became part of the DLR through a merger )

He was a member of the Academic Fliegergruppe Braunschweig .

Honors

Doetsch has received numerous awards. In 1957 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society . In 1972 he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit. In 1976 he was awarded the Von Karman Medal of the Advisory Group for Aerospace and Development (AGARD) of NATO and in 1977 an honorary doctorate from the Cranfield Institute of Technology . In 1977 he was awarded the knighthood of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
