Karl Heinz Schneider (born October 27, 1917 in Friedberg -Fauerbach; † October 12, 1991 ) was a Saarland politician ( SPD ).

Life

Schneider passed his matriculation examination at the Augustinerschule Friedberg in 1936 . He then did labor and military service until 1938 . After an internship, he began studying electrical engineering at the TH Darmstadt , which was interrupted in August 1939 when he was called up for military service. Several times on leave of absence, he was able to continue his studies and in 1944 take the main diploma examination. On December 1, 1938, he was accepted into the NSDAP (membership number 7,037,477).

After the war, from 1946 onwards, he worked for the Saarbrücken Post Office. In 1948 he passed the state examination for the higher civil engineering service at the German Post Central Office in Rastatt and was appointed post assessor . After three years as a postal councilor, he became head of the Saarbrücken telephone office in 1953. On April 16, 1955, he intervened against illegal telephone surveillance of opposition activists and journalists by the Sûreté . Press reports about the wiretapping led to public protests. In response, Schneider was relieved of his position as chief officer two days later and transferred to another office. After the Saarland joined the Federal Republic of Germany, he was employed by the Federal Post Office. On March 31, 1958 retired from the postal service.

From 1964 to 1982 he was director of the Saarbrücken utility and transport company . The most important project of his tenure was the realization of the Saar district heating system, which was designed in the wake of the energy crisis in 1973 in order to secure the energy supply through regional structures. The vision was to save primary energy - which is becoming more and more expensive - and to replace it with the use of combined heat and power and industrial waste heat. Today the Saar district heating network is one of the largest regional district heating network systems in Germany.

politics

In 1953 Schneider joined the unapproved German Social Democratic Party , which later merged with the SPD. In 1956 he was elected to the Saarbrücken city council. From April 1958 he was the official councilor of the city of Saarbrücken, then Saarbrücken mayor until 1964 .

In 1957 he was for Nicholas Carpenter in the state parliament of Saarland move up. He was a member of parliament until the end of the legislative period in 1961 and again from 1965 to 1975. A few weeks after leaving the state parliament, he was honored with the Saarland Order of Merit . A constitutional complaint by Schneider at the Federal Constitutional Court regarding the compensation of parliamentarians in Saarland led to the so-called diet judgment in November 1975 .
