Because of the political developments, Karl Julius Schröer felt he had to leave Hungary, and in 1860 he went to Vienna. From 1861 to 1866 he was director of the United Evangelical Schools on Karlsplatz . In 1866 he became professor of literary history at the Vienna University of Technology .

In the following years Schröer carried out research on German nationality in Hungary. As part of this research he discovered the popular Christmas games of Oberufer in the immediate vicinity of Pressburg. He collected manuscripts, made critical comparisons and published the book German Christmas Games from Hungary in 1857/58 . Many, but especially Schröer's later pupil in Vienna, Rudolf Steiner , who founded the Waldorf Schools after the First World War , in which the Oberuferer Christmas games are performed to this day, relied on this work .

The Goethe Monument in Vienna initiated by Schröer

In Vienna Schröer particularly distinguished himself as a Goethe researcher . In 1878 he co-founded the “Wiener Goetheverein”, whose chronicle he published in 1886. He commented on Goethe's works and was particularly concerned with Faust research, which he presented in a two-volume Faust edition. He published Goethe's dramas in six volumes. Finally, Schröer endeavored to create a Goethe monument in Vienna ; it was put out to tender in 1894 and created by Edmund Hellmann . It was revealed one day after Schröer's death.
