Karl Karekin Turekian (born 1927 in New York City , † March 15, 2013 ) was a professor of geology and geophysics at Yale University . He conducted research in the field of geochemistry of processes in the atmosphere, the oceans and on land and studied the evolution of planets.

Life and research

He was born in 1927 to Vaughan Thomas and Victoria Turekian. After attending James Monroe High School in New York and Wheaton College in Illinois from 1945 to 1949, he studied at Columbia University , where he obtained an MA in 1951 and a Ph.D. in 1955. In 1953 and 1954 he was a lecturer at Columbia College, Columbia University, and until 1956 a scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory . Since 1956 he worked at Yale University. From 1982 to 1988 he was chairman of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, and from 1992 to 1993 chairman of the Faculty of Environmental Studies. He was the curator of planetology and meteorites at the Peabody Museum and served on the governing bodies of several scientific organizations.

Turekian's main research areas were the geochemistry of trace elements. He researches marine , atmospheric and terrestrial geochemistry, and in the field of planetology deals with the formation and development of planets. Another focus of his work was geochronology .

He has authored five books and numerous scientific articles, was editor and co-editor of specialist books and co-editor of various scientific journals ( Journal of Geophysical Research , Earth and Planetary Science Letters , Global Biogeochemical Cycles and Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta ).
