Karl Komzák

Karl Komzák (born May 20, 1878 in Innsbruck , Tyrol , † September 5, 1924 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer and conductor. He was the son of Karl Komzák junior and Eugenie Komzák (nee Reichardt von Hardtland) and the grandson of Karl Komzák senior .

Life

Karl Komzák lived for the first four and a half years in Innsbruck and Riva on Lake Garda. After that he grew up in Vienna. At the age of 15, his parents moved with him to Baden near Vienna , where he attended the Biondekgasse high school and graduated from high school in June 1897 .

From 1905, the year his father Karl Komzák junior died , he led an orchestra consisting of 45 musicians, with whom he performed in Austria and Germany. In 1907 he gave concerts in Munich, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Augsburg and other cities. According to the reviewers, his performances were well received and the reviews identify him as a spirited conductor of excellent ability. From 1908 he stayed in Vienna again, where he and his orchestra accompanied silent film performances in the Urania. In 1919 he went on another tour to northern Bohemia (Marienburg, Eger and Rumburg and other cities). Max Schönherr sees in him only an “outdated epigone of his ancestors”. Of his works, only the Cricket Banner March, Op. 285 and the Waltz Münchner Kindl, Op. 286, have become popular. He also wrote an operetta, but it was never performed.

Shortly before his death, several legal proceedings were pending, which related to Komzák's activity as the owner of a poultry breeding and fattening facility in Maria-Lanzendorf . Although convicted under civil law, Komzák was not subject to criminal sanctions.

On September 5, 1924, Karl Komzák was found unconscious in the house at Pestalozzigasse  4, Vienna-Innere Stadt , which he had entered shortly before , and was taken to the Wiedner Hospital . At first it was suspected in public that Komzák had gotten himself into material difficulties and had a nervous breakdown. However, the autopsy of the body revealed that the deceased had died of a stroke , along with signs of heart disease.

Sometimes wrong factory assignments due to identical names

In contemporary reviews and sheet music editions, no distinction was ever made between Karl Komzák senior and Karl Komzák junior . Titles by both composers can even be found in collective editions without reference to the different authors. On the other hand, editions of Karl Komzák grandchildren during his lifetime were almost always marked with "Karl Komzák jr.", "Karl Komzák jun." or "Karl Komzák j." labeled. Due to this fact, Karl Komzák junior and Karl Komzák grandson are often confused and their works are assigned incorrectly.

He was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery (72B-15-15).
