Life

Karl Lessing was the son of the originally Jewish, Christian baptized businessman and tobacco shopkeeper Max Lessing (1817–1884) and Berta geb. Steindorff, attended the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster from 1862 and after graduating (September 23, 1870) studied classical philology, history and philosophy at the Berlin University , where Hermann Bonitz , Emil Hübner , Adolf Kirchhoff , Theodor Mommsen , Karl Wilhelm Nitzsch and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff were among his academic teachers. His doctorate as Dr. phil. he graduated on December 12, 1876 at the University of Halle with a dissertation on Aristophanes ' allusions and parodies of Euripides . Shortly afterwards, on January 23, 1877, he passed the teaching qualification and received the license to teach Latin, Greek and history in all classes, in geography up to upper secondary school.

Lessing completed his probationary year in the Prussian school service from April 1, 1877 at the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Berlin , where he received a permanent position as a regular teacher on April 1, 1878. He spent his entire career at this school, was appointed senior teacher on July 28, 1892 and professor on July 7, 1895. He later received the Red Eagle Order, fourth class. On October 14, 1915, he retired.

Lessing's academic work focused on the textual criticism, grammar and style of the Historia Augusta . His main work was a complete word index of the Historia Augusta, which he initially published in five parts as supplements to the school program of the Friedrichs-Gymnasium (1897-1901). He then published the entire work again in a revised form under the title Scriptorum historiae Augustae Lexicon (1901–1906).
