Karl Matthias (goldsmith)

Karl Matthias (full name Johann Karl Matthias junior ; born March 29, 1802 in Hanover ; † 1863 ibid) was a German court - goldsmith , silver worker and jeweler .

Life

Johann Karl Matthias was born at the time of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg during the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover as the son of the goldsmith Johann Jacob Gottlieb Matthias senior from Neubrandenburg and active in Hanover and Dorothea Margaretha Nobbe. After the so-called " French era " he completed his training with his father. In 1824 he worked as a journeyman for three months in Munich at Louis Wollenweber , then also in Heilbronn , where he worked for Peter Bruckmann in 1825 . Between 1825 and 1826 he worked for Vahland in Paris and then in England.

Back in Hanover, Matthias was admitted to the masterpiece in 1829, but was not allowed to set up his own workshop until March 1, 1831. Meanwhile, on February 9, 1830, he took the citizens' oath of the city of Hanover.

After King Ernst August returned from England to the royal seat of Hanover, Matthias was appointed court silver worker in 1838 .

After his marriage to Louise Sophie Ernestine Himmel from Rodenberg, the couple had a daughter on May 20, 1844.

For almost a decade, from January 27, 1849 to February 3, 1858, Karl Matthias was the head of his guild.

Also in 1858, Karl Matthias traded as a court gold and silver worker and jeweler on the Leineinsel at Ernst-Auguststrasse 1 . The gold and silver worker August Matthias lived and worked there that same year .

In 1861 Matthias employed three journeymen: Theodor Olsen from Bergen and Carl and Wilhelm Weigand from Heilbronn .

After his death, Carl Wilhelm Otto Rusch worked in the widow's shop.

A number of works by Matthias have been preserved, most of which are in private hands, including

  • partially gold-plated silver soup ladle from the dinner service of Queen Marie von Hanover (1818–1907), with the crowned coat of arms of Count Wolff Metternich zur Gracht and the Barons von Cramm, “probably engraved on the occasion of the wedding of Egbert Baron von Cramm and Helena Countess Wolff Metternich zur Gracht in 1984 ”; Stamped "12 Lot, weight approx. 220 grams, length 35 cm"
