Karl Paetow

Karl Paetow (born March 19, 1903 in Fürstenwalde ; † October 23, 1992 in Bad Oeynhausen ) was an folklorist, writer, director of the German Tobacco and Cigar Museum and the Bünde District Museum and founder of the German Fairy Tale and Weser Legends Museum Bad Oeynhausen.

Life

After Paetow had obtained his Abitur, he began studying German, art history and folklore in Göttingen, Frankfurt, Cologne, Bonn and Berlin. In 1928 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy in Leipzig with a dissertation on the subject of “Classicism and Romanticism at Wilhelmshöhe” . He then began an apprenticeship at the Hessian State Museum and assisted at the Museum on Augustplatz in Leipzig. In 1930 he became museum director in Stolp ( Pomerania ). From 1935 to 1945 he worked as a research assistant for the city of Kassel . From 1951 to 1968 Karl Paetow was director of the German Tobacco and District Museum in Bünde . After his retirement he founded and donated the German Fairy Tale and Weser Legends Museum in Bad Oeynhausen in 1973 , which he then headed for another 9 years.

Karl Paetow wrote a wealth of books with a focus on legends and fairy tales , which are mainly located in the Weserbergland . In his youth he was a member of the Wandervogel , his thoughts and work remained romantically determined. When the writers' association Die Kogge was re-established in 1953, he became a member, received the special prize for the cog in 1967 and in 1981 the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
