Karl Pink

Karl Pink (born June 18, 1884 in Vienna ; † August 15, 1965 there ) was an Austrian numismatist .

Life

Karl Pink attended grammar school in Meidling until he graduated from high school . From 1905 to 1909 he studied classical philology at the University of Vienna . He joined the Cistercian order in Wilhering Abbey in 1910 ( religious name Severin), studied Catholic theology and was ordained a priest in 1914. He then taught Greek and Latin at the Stiftsgymnasium in Wilhering. In 1922 he became a pastor in Vienna XIV .

From 1928 he worked as curator at the Münzkabinett of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna under Fritz Dworschak . As part of his work at the Münzkabinett, he arranged the ancient holdings according to modern principles and reorganized the library holdings according to subject areas.

In 1933, Pink completed his habilitation in numismatics at the University of Vienna with the work Die Münzpräge der Ostkelten and their neighbors . He was appointed private lecturer and worked on the numismatic teaching apparatus of the University of Vienna.

After the annexation of Austria in 1938, Karl Pink was dismissed for racial and political reasons. A colleague in a brown uniform prevented him from entering the Kunsthistorisches Museum on March 12, 1938. He was also unable to hold his numismatic lecture and exercise at the University of Vienna in the summer semester of 1938.

After the Second World War, from 1945 until his retirement in 1949, he worked again at the Kunsthistorisches Museum as custodian for ancient coins. Since 1946 he also taught as a tit. Associate professor again at the University of Vienna, where he held lectures until 1954. One of his most important students was Robert Göbl . In 1950 Pink was awarded the medal of the Royal Numismatic Society , and in 1959 the Eckhel Medal of the Austrian Numismatic Society , of which he was an honorary member.

Karl Pink's main areas of research were the coinage of the Roman Empire , especially the 3rd century, as well as the coins of the Celts . He was buried at the Meidlinger Friedhof .
