Edith Specht

Edith Wilhelmine Mette Maria Specht (born August 20, 1943 in Kilb ) is an Austrian ancient historian .

Life

Edith Specht, the fourth daughter of Matthias Ernst Specht and his wife Edith, b. Pultar, attended elementary school in Klosterneuburg Abbey from 1949 to 1953 and, from 1953/1954, after passing the entrance exam, the humanistic grammar school in Klosterneuburg . In June 1961 she passed the Matura . On the advice of her father, she completed a teaching degree at the University of Vienna : English and history, then specializing in numismatics and ancient history. To earn money, she did a wide variety of jobs: Hotel Sacher , Academic Travel Dr. Mader - Zurich etc. From 1966 she regularly takes part in excavations: Ephesus with Veronika Leon ÖAI ; Boğazköy and Norşuntepe under Harald Hauptmann DAI ; Limyra under Jürgen Borchhardt DAI, all in Turkey ; Pleuron under Friedrich Brein ( Greece ). She had scholarships in Rome and Athens and made further trips abroad to study language. After receiving his doctorate in May 1969 as Dr. phil. with the dissertation Die Münzprinz von Tenedos (reviewer Robert Göbl and Fritz Schachermeyr ) she worked in the private sector from 1972 to 1974. Since February 1, 1975, she has been a university assistant at the then Institute for Ancient History, Archeology and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna. With the entry into force of the University Organization Act 1975, intensive participation - partly in a leading position - in the university committees (institute conference, study commission, senate, contact committee of the junior staff of the University of Vienna), but also in the staff representation (service committee). Since 1978 she has been holding regular courses in ancient history. After her habilitation in 1985 ( women's socialization and education for girls in Greece ) for ancient history and antiquity with a special focus on women's studies, she became an associate professor in 1994 . In 1997 she became a project manager in the cultural agreement between Vienna, Rome and Oslo on the topic of Gender and Religion in Europe.

She is married to Dr. Harald Oelschlaeger.
