Professors Fritz Eichler , Hedwig Kenner , Artur Betz , Fritz Schachermeyr , Albin Lesky and Walther Kraus particularly influenced him . He has taught at the University of Vienna since 1971, first as an assistant and lecturer , after completing his habilitation in Classical Archeology in 1982 as a lecturer and finally as an associate professor . Even after his retirement in 2000, he continued to teach.

He knew the archaeological field work, albeit mostly entrusted with the processing of finds, through his own participation in the excavations in Aguntum (1959/60), on Magdalensberg (1961–1964) and in the Artemision of Ephesus (1972–1981). He had been married to Ilse since 1967 and had two sons, Laurenz and Georg. He is buried in the Strebersdorf cemetery .
