Karl Purrmann (born May 16, 1877 in Speyer , † December 20, 1966 in Stuttgart ) was a German painter .

Life

Karl Purrmann, a cousin of Hans Purrmann , attended secondary school and then completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter before he attended the arts and crafts school in Stuttgart from 1893 to 1897. In 1903 he became a teacher for nude and figure drawing at the Royal College for the Precious Metals Industry in Schwäbisch Gmünd . He held this position for 15 years.

Study trips took him to England, Belgium, Holland and Paris, among others. He was particularly interested in the architecture of the big cities.

Purrmann painted numerous interiors , especially of southern German baroque and rococo churches and castles. Some of his works are reminiscent of Menzel's works . In addition, he produced views of the buildings by the Beutinger & Steiner architectural team , including a view of the Kirsch & Mausser factory in Heilbronn's Salzstrasse.

Paul Schmohl had commissioned Purrmann with the wall decorations for the gallery of the concert hall in Heidenheim an der Brenz . Purrmann created twelve pictures with music-making fauns in tempera and two oil paintings, which were entitled Autumn and Flower Piece. These pictures were only hung after the inauguration of the house and were first seen at a concert on July 19, 1914. They remained in place until August 1947 and were then removed and destroyed as out of date. Until 1985, wall lights were installed in the places where they once hung. Three sketches for the destroyed pictures have been preserved and were shown on the occasion of the centenary of the Konzerthaus by the Förderungs-Gemeinschaft Karl Purrmann eV Stuttgart.

One of Purrmann's works was exhibited in the Württembergischer Kunstverein; In 2006/07 the exhibition Karl Purrmann (1877-1966): "The Swabian Spitzweg from Speyer" took place in the Purrmann House in Speyer . In 2009, pictures by Purrmann were on view in the exhibition Impressionism and Modernism from the Fritz and Karl-Ulrich Nuss Collection and the VGW Schwäbisch Gmünd in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

Two pictures from 1918 are in the military-historical picture collection of the Baden-Württemberg State Archives. In the meeting room of the Old Town Hall in Leonberg , a view of Leonberg's market square has been hanging since 2014, which Heinrich Längerer once commissioned Purrmann. In 1948 Willy Steuerwald's book Karl Purrmann was published. A painter - a master in Stuttgart with Grieshaber and Säuberlich. In 2014 the Museumgesellschaft Ehingen published the book Remarkable Ehinger - Moved away, moved in, stayed , in which Karl Purrmann's biography can also be found.
