Karl Schlögl

Karl Schlögl (born October 5, 1924 in Vienna ; † May 4, 2007 ) was an Austrian chemist and former Secretary General and Vice President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Schlögl studied chemistry at the University of Vienna after graduating from the Matura ; In 1950 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . After a stay abroad at the University of Manchester , he received the license to teach organic chemistry at the University of Vienna after completing his habilitation in 1959 . He was initially appointed associate professor, in 1971 he was appointed full professor of organic chemistry. From 1974 he was director and from 1978 chairman of the Institute for Organic Chemistry. From 1977 to 1979 he was the first elected dean of the Faculty of Formal Sciences and Natural Sciences.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences elected Schlögl in 1978 as a corresponding member and in 1982 as a real member. From 1991 to 1995 he held the office of Secretary General, from 1997 to 2000 that of the Vice President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) . In addition, Schlögl had been a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalia Academy of Sciences and the New York Academy of Sciences since 1977 .

Act

Karl Schlögl is considered to be one of the pioneers of stereochemistry , research into the spatial structure of organic compounds and the associated effects on reaction behavior, but he has also worked successfully on the development of new active pharmaceutical ingredients. He also worked closely with the Pharmacological Institute and its director Otto Kraupp .

He was the author of around 200 publications and has received numerous national and international awards. In 1985 he received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in 1989 the Prize for Natural Sciences of the City of Vienna and in 1991 the Wilhelm Exner Medal of the Austrian Trade Association . Schlögl was honorary president of the Society of Austrian Chemists for life.
