Carl Wohnlich: An honorable gentleman

Karl Wohnlich (also Carl Wohnlich ; born December 26, 1824 in Friedland , Province of Silesia , † November 20, 1885 in Dresden ) was a German history , genre and portrait painter .

Life

The son of a Friedland master tailor was homely. On October 30, 1852, he enrolled in painting at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. His teachers included Philipp von Foltz , Carl Theodor von Piloty and Moritz von Schwind . He went on an educational trip to Italy and was based in Breslau from 1864 , later he returned to Munich. His last place of work was Dresden.

Wohnlich created numerous history, genre and altar paintings as well as portraits. His most famous works are:

  • Battle of the Mongols near Liegnitz 1241 (1870; acquired by the Silesian Museum in Breslau)
  • Breslau, St. Barbara Church : high altar picture
  • Breslau, former Jesuit church (from 1819 St. Matthias): high altar picture of Our Lady of Sorrows (1860)
  • Munich, Maximilianeum : Fresco Count Palatine Christoph leaves Heidelberg and is crowned King of Denmark in 1430
  • For the parish church of his hometown he painted the main altar painting “St. Clan "
