Karl Zeller (born January 9, 1961 in Meran ) is a German-speaking Italian politician from South Tyrol . The lawyer is a member of the South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP).

biography

Zeller studied business administration and law at the Leopold Franzens University in Innsbruck and at the University of Florence . After graduating in both subjects , he did his doctorate in Innsbruck in 1989 with a dissertation on the possibilities of intervention by the Roman central organs in the autonomous legislative and executive powers of South Tyrol. From 1986 to 1990 Zeller was an assistant at the Institute for International Law and International Relations at the University of Innsbruck. He is the author of various publications on constitutional, international and European law issues relating to the autonomy of South Tyrol , which he has been involved in shaping as a member of the Six and Twelve Commissions since 1994.

Since 1990 Zeller has played a leading role in the Burggrafenamt district of the South Tyrolean People's Party, initially as deputy chairman, and from 2007 to 2017 as district chairman. In the parliamentary elections in March 1994 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament in Rome in the single constituency of Merano and confirmed in the parliamentary elections in April 1996 and May 2001 . In the parliamentary elections of April 2006 and April 2008 , he was re-elected in the multi-person constituency of Trentino-South Tyrol . From 1994 he worked in the Chamber of Deputies as a member of the Constitutional Committee.

After 19 years in the Chamber of Deputies, Zeller won a mandate for the Senate in the 2013 parliamentary elections in the single-electoral district of Merano with 53.5% of the votes . On March 18, 2013, Zeller was elected chairman of the Per le Autonomie parliamentary group in the Senate. In the 2018 elections , he was no longer able to stand for election due to the SVP's internal term of office and subsequently left parliament.

In 2019 he was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria .

Private

Zeller is divorced, father of five and has been working as a lawyer in the law firm Thurin, Vinatzer & Zeller in Merano since 1992, mainly dealing with administrative, constitutional and construction law.

His ex-wife Julia Unterberger is also a lawyer and politician.
