Karla Etschenberg

Karla Etschenberg (* 1941 in Uelzen ) is a German pedagogue and professor for didactics of biology with a focus on human biology , health education and sex education .

Life

She studied in Cologne and worked as a primary and secondary school teacher in North Rhine-Westphalia until 1979 . After passing the 2nd state examination, she obtained a diploma in pedagogy , did her doctorate in the field of didactics in biology and became a research assistant at the University of Cologne . From 1989 she worked for two years at the Federal Ministry of Health , where she was jointly responsible for AIDS and youth in the AIDS coordination team . After her habilitation in 1991, she was appointed to a professorship at the University of Education in Kiel . After its restructuring to become a university, she moved to the University of Flensburg in 2000 , where she retired in 2005 . She has been the recipient of the Magnus Hirschfeld Medal of the German Society for Social Science Sex Research (DGSS) since 2012 .

She has been married since 1963 and lives in Cologne .

Focus of work

In addition to teacher training and further education, Etschenberg deals in numerous publications with content-related and methodological issues in biology teaching, particularly in the area of ​​health and sex education. The teaching aids and models she developed are geared towards the goal of making biological specialist knowledge usable in a practical way.

She is co-editor of the journal Studium Biologie and editor of several themed issues on health and sex education. For the Federal Center for Health Education she has u. a. designed the teaching materials for AIDS awareness and information material for parents and teachers on the topic of "chronically ill children in school". In sex education , she is a representative of ideology-free, scientifically based sex education from elementary school onwards, based on socio-ethical values ​​such as self-determination, partnership, tolerance and consideration.

She was chairwoman of the German Society for Gender Education for many years and is Vice-President of the German Society for Social Science Sex Research . She is involved in child and youth protection on a voluntary basis; for example, she has been on the board of the North Rhine-Westphalia child and youth protection working group since 1979 . She is currently also concerned with issues relating to the protection of minors on the Internet. She is also known for her call for pornographic films to be included in school lessons in order to be able to advise young people on how to deal with them. She justifies this with the apparent inability of society to keep pornography away from minors.
