Karlsfried is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the Zittau Mountains . It is located approximately midway between the Zittau village Eichgraben and Lückendorf on a rocky spur of Strasbourg mountain above over the joint between Straßberg and Heidenberg leading state Straße 132 .

history

Karlsfried Castle was built in 1357 by Burgrave Ulrich Tista von Liebstein on the orders of Emperor Charles IV . It was not intended as a residence, but only served as a fortified customs post on a trade route ( Gabler Reichsstraße ) between the Bohemian heartland and Upper Lusatia . Customs were levied here; the castle also provided shelter and escort to traders. In 1364 Zittau became the tenant of the castle for 300 shock Prague groschen.

In 1412 Bailiff Hinko Berka von Dubá took over the castle.

In 1421 the castle withstood a siege by the Hussites , but was then burned to the ground in a second siege in January 1424. Then the castle was rebuilt again under Emperor Sigismund . Her new owner Jan von Wartenberg undertook raids in the area from there. To prevent this, the city of Zittau bought the castle in 1442 and had it pulled down. Much of its debris was removed and reused in the area as inexpensive building material. So were z. B. in 1690 stones for the Lückendorf church broken off. The rest of the demolition took place in 1721 as building material for Zittau.

The remains of the entrance tower, and a small left over from Karlfried today Palas quadrangular keep . Evident is also the wall that by bypassing the in the valley below the castle road forced incurred sunken roads made impassable. This type of castle is also known as a " dam " in German literature .

The Karlsfried ruins are now inconspicuously located in the forest, right next to the Zittau – Lückendorf road. It can be reached on foot both from the road and from the east via hiking trails and can be visited free of charge at any time. However, there are no guided tours, and apart from a nearby refuge and well-marked hiking trails, there is no infrastructure at all.
