Karol Estreicher (the elder)
Karol Józef Teofil Estreicher (also Karl Estreicher Ritter von Rozbierski ; Karl Josef von Estreicher ; Karl Joseph Theofil von Estreicher ; pseudonym J. Krupski ; born November 22, 1827 in Krakow ; † September 30, 1908 ibid) was a Polish philologist , bibliographer , Librarian and translator and long-time director of the Kraków Jagiellonian Library .
Life
Karol Estreicher came from the Krakow branch of the Estreicher family . His parents were the botanist Alojzy Rafał Estreicher and Antonina nee. Rozbierska.
After graduating from high school in 1843, he studied philology at Kraków University until 1845 and then law until 1848. He was then a court trainee in Krakow until 1855 and then in Lemberg until 1862 . In 1862 he became a notary at the court in Wojnicz . In the same year he moved to Warsaw , where he was appointed deputy director of the library of the Warsaw University of Applied Sciences (instead of the closed university) and in 1865 to the chair of bibliography. In 1867 he acquired the doctorate degree.
In 1868 he moved to Cracow, where he was director of the Jagiellonian University Library until 1905 .
In 1872 he became a full member of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU), which he co-founded . From 1870 to 1908 he was editor of the first 22 volumes of the "Bibliografia Polska". His son Stanisław († 1939) and his grandson Karol of the same name continued this work until 1951.

In 1881 he was raised to the nobility as Karl Estreicher Ritter von Rozbierski by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I , who was also Grand Duke of Cracow ; In 1905 he awarded him the title of Austrian court counselor .
Karl Estreicher, who wrote about 700 papers, translated about 30 French, German, Italian and Spanish plays in addition to his academic work.
