The barracks Roter Sand is a former barracks of the police at the old customs office Rotersand in Bremerhaven .
history
The barracks building was built between 1925 and 1926 to house the Bremen police. The security police emerged from the security police, which had been disbanded in the summer of 1920. The strictly militarily organized unit, also known as the Green Police , was primarily intended for use in civil unrest and was under the command of Police Colonel Walter Caspari .
After the establishment of the Bundeswehr , the property was handed over to the German Navy . The naval communications battalion 771 was last housed here.
architecture
The drafts were created in the building department in Bremen under the direction of chief building officer Hans Ohnesorge . The architect in charge was building officer Gustav Ulrich . The stately, local barracks building is axially symmetrical and has five storeys in the barracks type that has been handed down since the baroque era . The representative west facade and the large Bremen national coat of arms in the gable of the central risalit symbolize Bremen's regulatory power in Bremerhaven. The facade is particularly expressive through the two-storey vestibule of the main entrance with five round arches.
Monument protection
The main building of the barracks, located on the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße , was included in the state monument list by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments . The remise building, which was built at the same time as the barracks and slanted to the north, has lost its monument status due to various renovations. The Rotersand barracks, with the harmonious design of the façades as a public building with an unusual, representative character for artistic reasons, but especially due to its regional historical references (location of the police) for scientific (historical, local historical) reasons, is a cultural monument according to Section 2 Paragraph 1 No. 1 Brem. Monument Protection Act (DSchG). The reasons for the protection are so important that the preservation of the former barracks is in the public interest.
Todays use
The havenhostel Bremerhaven was opened in the barracks building in January 2010 . The renovation was carried out taking into account monument and climate protection aspects. It is the first hostel in Bremerhaven to offer over 200 beds for overnight stays. The former crew quarters are divided into single, double, four and six-bed rooms. There is a restaurant in the basement , and a lounge and leisure facilities on the ground floor . Six rooms are available for conferences or seminars.
