Kaspar Friedrich Nachtenhöfer (born March 5, 1624 in Halle (Saale) , † November 23, 1685 in Coburg ) was a Protestant pastor and hymn poet .

Life

Nachtenhöfer was born the son of a pastor. He attended high schools in Halle / Saale, Zeitz , Altenburg and Coburg . In 1647 he went to the University of Leipzig , where he received his master's degree in 1651 . On the recommendation of his father's friend Tobias Seifart , who had been its rector in Altenburg until 1644 and later worked as general superintendent in Coburg, the chancellor August Carpzov accepted him as a tutor for his children.

However, he only stayed in this position for a few months, only to follow a call as a deacon in Meeder northwest of Coburg in 1651 , where he then became pastor four years later. After 20 years he went back to Coburg, where he was pastor and deacon at St. Moriz Church .

Married four times, Nachtenhöfer suffered many visits from the death of close relatives. He was active as a writer until his later years; in addition to his hymns, which are still sung today, sermons and mostly Latin poems as well as some historical and theological works have been preserved.
