Johann Georg Freiherr von Grechtler (born April 8, 1705 in Kippenheim , Baden-Württemberg ; † September 1, 1780 in Hütteldorf , Vienna ) was an imperial sergeant-general , secret councilor and owner of several manors .

Life

He was born in Kippenheim, on the edge of the Black Forest , in simple circumstances. He worked his way up as a committed carter and became an army supplier. Johann Georg von Grechtler was the head of the transport and provisions system in the imperial army on the Rhine and in the Netherlands .

In 1750 he married the widow Maria Magdalena Katharina von Timmel (née Trollin ) in Freiburg im Breisgau . In the same year he was raised to the imperial baron status and in 1751 to the hereditary baron status of all Austrian countries. He was promoted to general sergeant major (roughly equivalent to a major general today ) in 1762. From 1767 he was a real royal privy councilor.

His activities in the army made him rich and from 1750 on he bought the Lordship of Fridau near Ober-Grafendorf and Rabenstein an der Pielach . He then acquired the dominions of Weißenburg , Kirchberg an der Pielach , Mainburg, Tradigist, Salau, Waasen and Weinburg .

Johann Georg Freiherr von Grechtler therefore united the Pielach Valley from Ober-Grafendorf to Puchenstuben in his hand until 1755 . He also had other possessions in Kilb and Hürm , in Upper Austria's Wartenburg, Thalheim and Anwalting, and in his home town of Hecklingen in Breisgau. He also owned the dominions of Vöslau and Hütteldorf , where he died in 1780 and was also buried. He had a son, Georg Anton Freiherr von Grechtler , who received property worth 4 million guilders as a sole heir and is buried in Weinburg.

He and his son left foundations for the poor. In 1774 he had a poor house built in Ober-Grafendorf and contributed 1,500 guilders to it.

Honors

There is a Grechtlergasse named after him in Ober-Grafendorf, a Grechtlerstrasse in Weinburg and a Freiherr-von-Grechtler-Strasse in his place of birth, Kippenheim.
