Thomas Kastenmaier (born May 31, 1966 in Munich ) is a former German soccer player .

Career as a player

The defender Kastenmaier began playing football in the youth of SF Harteck Munich and later moved to TSV Milbertshofen . With the national team of the Bavarian State Association he won the national cup of amateurs in 1989 after the team from Hessen was defeated 4: 2 on penalties (2-2 after 90 minutes). On August 31, 1989, he made his debut - in the meantime switched to FC Bayern Munich - in the 4-0 home win over Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga , when he came on for Manfred Schwabl in the 60th minute and nine minutes later with the interim 3: 0 also scored his first goal. After nine Bundesliga games, three games in the European Cup and winning the championship , Kastenmaier switched to league competitor Borussia Mönchengladbach , where he became a regular player straight away. In eight seasons he played 182 first division games - including all 38 in the 1991/92 season - and scored 40 goals. With Borussia, he also reached the final of the DFB Cup in 1992 , which was lost on penalties against Hannover 96 . In 1995, however, the final against VfL Wolfsburg was won 3-0. Kastenmaier played his last game in the Bundesliga on December 7, 1996 where his professional career began - at Bayern Munich. In the 75th minute, the 0-1 lost encounter ended for him when he was substituted for Peter Nielsen . His injuries were so severe that he was not used either in the second half of the season or in the following season.

Career as a coach

After his playing career, Kastenmaier first found a job in the Borussia Mönchengladbach office before coaching the club's U17 team. After the dismissal of the previous coach Manfred Stefes , Kastenmaier took over the management of the amateurs in the Oberliga Nordrhein on March 8, 2004 until the end of the season. In the following season, Kastenmaier moved back to the position of co-trainer - due to the commitment of Horst Köppel as head coach .

On June 25, 2005 he took over the post of assistant coach of the second division club LR Ahlen . After the resignation of coach František Straka , Kastenmaier took over responsibility for the team as interim coach on October 25, 2005, but was replaced by Paul Linz one day later and again took the position of assistant coach, which he held until December 6, 2005 - with replacement by Arno Michels - held. From mid-November 2007 to June 2008 he coached the district league club SC Wegberg and from July 2008 was the responsible coach of SC 09 Erkelenz in the district league 4, Middle Rhine.
