3 Slavic castles from the 7th-12th centuries Century on the shore and on the island |
The Kastorfer See is located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, northwest of Neubrandenburg . It lies between the communities of Knorrendorf, the district of Kastorf in the west and Wildberg in the east. It is a channel lake and was created during the last Ice Age ( Vistula Ice Age ) from a former meltwater channel that was permanently filled with water after the ice had receded. It is divided by a widening with an island in the middle into a more articulated, narrow north basin and an elongated, also very narrow, undivided south basin. It has an approximate length of 2.1 kilometers and a width of 500 meters in the middle of the lake. The east bank is wooded (Wildberger Forst) and the west bank is used for agriculture. The lake is fed in the north by a ditch that rises from a wetland near Wolde , from which the Mühlbach flowing to the east also flows. At the southern end of the lake there is a drainage ditch that crosses the Gädebehner See and the Möllner See and is called Lühmbach from Mölln . The body of water is part of the Kastorfer-Möllner chain of lakes and was probably previously connected to the Gädebehner See and Möllner See.
Slavic settlements
On Kastorfer See are the Castle Wall Kastorf , Burgwall Wildberg and the castle barrier island three Slavic fortifications from the 7th to 12th centuries. It is assumed that this is the center of the Tollensian tribes .
