Life

Katharina Domschke studied medicine from 1997 to 2004 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and at Trinity College Dublin , Ireland. From 2001 to 2002 she studied psychology at Boston University (USA) with a Master of Arts (MA) degree . In 2004 she received her license to practice medicine and received her doctorate as Dr. med. at the Wilhelms University of Münster.

Domschke worked as an assistant doctor in 2005 at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Clinic in Bonn and from 2005 to 2010 at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Clinic in Münster, with an intermittent change to the Neurology Clinic there . She completed her habilitation in 2008 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In 2010 she obtained a PhD from Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

In 2010 Domschke became an adjunct professor at the Medical Faculty of Münster, from 2012-2016 she held a W2 professorship for psychiatry at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , at the same time she was senior physician at the Würzburg University Hospital from 2012 to 2014, then until 2016 Deputy Director of the Clinic for Psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy.

In 2016 she became professor of psychiatry at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and medical director at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Medical Center Freiburg.

A particular focus of Domschke's research is the prediction and therapy of anxiety disorders , especially the interrelationships between genes and the environment ( epigenetics ). While researching epigenetic mechanisms in anxiety disorders, she found that reduced methylation of the monoamine oxidase- A gene increases the risk of developing panic disorder . In addition, she was able to prove that successful psychotherapy normalizes the DNA methylation pattern again.

Katharina Domschke plays a leading role in numerous research projects. It has received research funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Union .

In 2017 she became a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . She received several awards for her research, such as the research award of the "World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry".
