Katharina Meisel Galor (born Katharina Meisel ; born April 11, 1966 in Düsseldorf ) is a German-Israeli art historian and archaeologist specializing in Israel and Palestine .

life and work

Katharina Galor has been teaching at Brown University in the USA since 1998, where she is currently Visiting Associate Professor of Judaic Studies and Visiting Associate Professor of Urban Studies. In 1985 she graduated from Comenius-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. In 1989 she obtained her maîtrise in art history and archeology at the University of Aix-Marseille in France with the work Les sols de mosaïques en Palestine pendant l'époque du roi Hérode le Grand . She received her Diplôme d'études approfondies in art history and archeology at the University of Aix-Marseille in 1991 with the thesis "La culture des Juifs dans la Rome antique". In 1996 Galor received her Ph.D. in Ancient Art and Archeology from Brown University in Providence , United States with her PhD thesis "Domestic Architecture in the Galilee and the Golan during the Roman and Byzantine Periods". In 1997 she completed a post-doctorate in history and archeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Galor was visiting professor at the École biblique et archéologique française and at the Rothberg School of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at Tufts University and the Rhode Island School of Design in the USA. She was a fellow at the WF Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem, the Institute for Archeology at the Hebrew University, the Berlin Antike College, the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Einstein Center Chronoi of the Einstein Berlin Foundation. She was president of the Narragansett Society branch of the American Institute of Archeology from 2006 to 2009 . She speaks German, French, English, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian and classic Hebrew.

Katharina Galor worked as an archaeologist in France and in the southern Levant with a research focus on ethnicity, religion and gender between 1988 and 2006. Since 2006, its territory has also expanded in the direction of cultural heritage with a focus on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Katharina Galor was married to the Israeli economist Oded Galor from 1991 to 2007 . She has been married to the US historian Michael P. Steinberg since 2007 . When he became President of the American Academy in Berlin in August 2016 , she moved back to Germany after 30 years of absence. The couple have seven children from previous marriages. They have been living between New England and Provence since 2018.
