history

Grand Duchess Catherine in the 1860s

The Katharinenstift was founded in 1866 by Grand Duchess Katharina Michailowna Romanowa , the wife of Duke Georg zu Mecklenburg (1824–1876) . The couple lived in Remplin Castle, 16 km away . The original purpose was not only to give poor, parentless female children, who must be between the ages of 2 and 7 when they are admitted, a friendly shelter, but also food that is as good as it is rational, such as one to have an excellent education breathed through by the spirit of Christianity and to train them to become capable servants or the like.

The pen was under the patronage of Katharinas and received her name. It was financed with the help of voluntary contributions from an association that quickly formed. The board of directors of the monastery was made up of three women who were responsible for the external as well as the top internal management. In 1882 these were Mrs. von Oertzen auf Kittendorf , Mrs. von Michael auf Groß Plasten and the wife of Pastor Niederhöffer in Stavenhagen. The actual internal management of the monastery was entrusted to two sisters of the Salem monastery near Stettin . The business affairs were taken care of by a Rendant from Stavenhagen. With an announcement of September 15, 1868, the Grand Duke granted the monastery the rights of a legal person as a pious body ( pium corpus ).

In 1892 the monastery received a legacy of 4,000 marks from the estate of Henry William Ferdinand Bolckow . In the same year, Countess Plessen donated a house altar to Ivenack .

In the time of National Socialism , the monastery was de-Christianized and placed under the National Socialist People's Welfare .

After the Second World War the diaconal character of the foundation was restored.

Today the Katharinenstift is a dormitory for women and men with disabilities sponsored by the Mecklenburg Lake District Diakonie . It offers 30 places in 12 single rooms and 9 double rooms on three floors of the historic monastery building.

For the 150th anniversary, the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum presented a special exhibition from May 20 to August 13, 2016 Grand Duchess Katharina and the Katharinenstift . On August 19, 2016, the anniversary was celebrated with a festive service in the city church of Stavenhagen with regional bishop Andreas von Maltzahn .
