Brindisi Cathedral
The Cathedral of Brindisi or the Cathedral Basilica of John the Baptist ( Italian Basilica Cattedrale de Giovanni Battista ) is a church in the port city of Brindisi in the Italian region of Apulia . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Brindisi-Ostuni dates from the 11th century and has the rank of a minor basilica . It was often the starting point for trips to the Holy Land .
history
The cathedral was built as part of the rebuilding of the city after the Norman conquest of southern Italy . It was consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1089 and completed by 1143. Roger III was born in the cathedral . Crowned king in 1191, who married Irene of Byzantium here the following year . Emperor Friedrich II also married Isabella II , Queen of Jerusalem here in 1225 . At the end of the 16th century, the Romanesque apse was demolished to allow a large choir to be built. On February 20, 1743, a violent earthquake completely destroyed the cathedral, which was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1746 by the architect Mauro Mainieri . Since then, it has been restored several times without changing its structure. On July 10, 1867 she was by Pope Pius IX. raised to the rank of a minor basilica. On June 15, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI visited Brindisi Cathedral and met clergy, deacons and seminarians from the Archdiocese of Brindisi-Ostuni.
architecture
The floor plan of the basilica, similar to the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari , remained unchanged Romanesque with three naves without transept. The facade has a central portal and is structured with pilaster strips . The large stone figures are from 2007. On the left is the bell tower, completed in 1795 . In the chapel dedicated to St. Theodore Tiro , the patron saint of the city of Brindisi, is consecrated together with St. Lawrence , the mortal remains of the martyr are kept. In the interior there are fragments of the mosaic floor from 1178. The choir stalls date from the 16th century.
