That of the Assumption of Mary consecrated Cathedral of Lamego ( Portuguese Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção ) in the northern Portuguese city of Lamego is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lamego .

location

The cathedral is located a few meters outside the old town of Lamego, which is about 500  m high and just under 1 km west of the Rio Balsemão .

history

The Lamego diocese possibly came into being around 570; in any case, bishop names from this time are known. Traces of his survival can also be found in the time of the Islamic - Moorish occupation. After the recapture ( reconquista ) of the north of present-day Portugal by Ferdinand I of León in 1057 it existed de facto on, but only four years after the independence of Portugal (1139) was the diocese in 1143 by King Alfonso I refounded. The bell tower of today's cathedral dates from this period , but was fundamentally changed in the 16th century in the late Gothic and Renaissance styles . On September 30, 1881, Pope Leo XIII ordered in the bull Gravissimum the diocese Lamego as a suffragan diocese of the archdiocese of Braga .

architecture

The portal facade of the three-aisled and straight, ie apsideless closing cathedral makes a rather Gothic impression from the outside; the portal garments are decorated with small human figures, mythical creatures and vegetal tendrils . The tracery of the large west window already shows Renaissance forms. The interior of the building is also clearly marked by the straight lines and clarity of the Renaissance art concept; Particularly noteworthy are the windows in the side aisles, reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome, and the square baroque lantern tower above the crossing .

Furnishing

In 1738, the Italian-born artist Nicolau Nasoni, who had lived and worked in the Porto area since 1723, was commissioned to design ceiling frescoes with themes from the Old Testament . It is unclear to what extent he carried out the work himself or left it to the employees of his workshop. The three baroque altars in the church are also noteworthy. The two organs in the choir were installed in 1753. The altarpiece and pulpit also date from the Baroque period.

Cloister

The only partially two-storey cloister (claustro) on the north side of the church was built between 1523 and 1564; its supports have an octagonal cross-section. Some of the capitals are probably from a previous Gothic building. In the middle of the cloister is a large four-pass-shaped fountain basin .
