The Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul zu Senftenberg is a church built in 1924 in the southern Brandenburg town of Senftenberg . The Catholic Church is at Calauer Strasse 1 in the north of the city. Just like the Evangelical Church in Senftenberg , it is consecrated to the Apostles Peter and Paul . The church is a listed building .

history

Under the Saxon Duke Heinrich the Pious , the Lutheran faith was introduced in Senftenberg in 1539, as in all parts of Albertine Saxony.

Only with industrialization through lignite mining and the associated influx of industrial workers from other areas did the proportion of the Catholic population increase. In 1871 the Wittichenau pastor Schneider granted the parish administrator Spittel the right to exercise pastoral care in Senftenberg in full. According to a decree of November 18, 1887 by the Archbishop of Breslau, Cardinal Kopp , the parish Senftenberg took over pastoral care in the city. The first Catholic service after the Reformation was held on November 20, 1887 by Pastor Sauer in what was then the Hotel Baranius not far from the train station .

Soon after, was a Catholic on 20 December 1893 half-timbered - Interim church consecrated in the north of the city in the Calauer road. According to the permit for the church building, a new church should be built after five years. A clinker-brick church with a massive high tower was built, which was consecrated in 1898. This church is still partially preserved today.

Due to the increasing number of Catholics, this church soon became too small, so that a new building was planned under Pastor Stanislaus von Tessen. However, the start of construction was delayed by the inflation. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on June 1, 1924. The old church was expanded to include aisles so that the outer walls of the previous church became the pillars of the new one. The tower roof and the chancel were also added. On May 25, 1925, the Wroclaw Auxiliary Bishop Valentin Wojciech consecrated the church.

Only the left aisle was damaged during the Second World War . However, the damage was quickly repaired. From 1954 to 1957 the chancel was rebuilt. In 1957 new lighting from West Berlin was installed in the church and the interior of the church was painted.

From 1977 to 1981 the church was redesigned by the Kamenz artist Gottfried Zawadzki . Glass concrete windows were installed. The church received new pews and new lighting. In March 1981 the church was painted. On March 27, 1982, the renovation was completed with the consecration of the altar by Bishop Bernhard Huhn .

In 2002 the church was repainted and given its current appearance.

Building description

The church consists of a main nave , two side aisles and a chancel . The pillars of the church are the outer walls of the previous church. In the west tower a clock is installed.

Interior

Sanctuary

In 1954, the Cottbus artist Hertel began redesigning the chancel. After the high altar was demolished on May 19, 1954, the basic construction of the altar and chancel began. On September 1, 1954, the figures Peter and Paul were placed on the ready-to-use altar. The chancel was lined with travertine that was donated by the Bonifatiuswerk . The new tabernacle , for which the community donated gold and silver, was made in Burg . In 1956 the high altar was consecrated on Maundy Thursday.

When the church was redesigned in 1977, the high altar, the chancel and the side altars were removed. The altar, tabernacle and ambo were cast from concrete. These, as well as the steps and the chancel, were faced with clinker bricks. Only the body of the crucified Christ remained from the old high altar. The figures of the apostles were moved.

organ

Organ prospectus

In 1925 the pneumatic organ made by GF Steinmeyer & Co. in Oettinger was installed. For financial reasons, only the first manual of the two-manual organ was installed. The organ construction was never completed. Over time, the organ deteriorated more and more and was only temporarily repaired by parishioners. In 1992 it was inoperable.

For lack of money, an electronic two-manual resonator organ was installed in December 1993. Their loudspeakers and resonators were installed behind the preserved old organ prospect.
