life and work

One in love sees a flower differently than a camel does , by Kathrin Schlegel, Hoorn , Netherlands (2014)

Kathrin Schlegel studied fine art at the AKI in Enschede from 1997 to 2001 and then switched to the Münster Art Academy . First she studied in the class of Timm Ulrichs and then with Guillaume Bijl , who made her a master class student in 2002 . Kathrin Schlegel has lived and worked in Amsterdam since 2003 . She received in 2005 at the Sandberg Institute of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie the Master of Fine Arts.

A work realized in public space in 2010 is entitled There are worse things you could be accused of than being a flower . Schlegel installed the bronze cast of a chandelier under the Smallebrug in Amersfoort , which redefined the place. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to perceive the metamorphosis of the space under the bridge into the hall of a fairytale castle. The metal grids in the railway bridge seem to be a glass ceiling. The bridge piers become pillars , the reflection of the Eem adds another dimension. The downward-facing daffodils on the chandelier refer to the story of Echo and Narcissus and thus to the examination of the mirror image as a form of self-delusion, as well as the reflection that creates the illusion of revealing the true nature of the self. The glass chandelier made by the Venetian glass blower Seguso, which was used for the casting, is also to be shown in the Eemhuis in Amersfoort.

One in Love Sees a Flower Differently Than a Camel Does (2014) is a permanent work in the Blokkerse Veld development area in Hoorn . By installing park benches and street lamps in the water, thereby changing the context, Schlegel composes a new, perceptible, romantic arrangement that is particularly reflective in the evening and remains inaccessible to passers-by and cannot be used. The title comes from a yogi tea bag.
