Katrin Böhning-Gaese (born December 22, 1964 in Oberkochen ) is a German biologist specializing in ornithology , professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , director of the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center (BiK-F) and Vice President of Leibniz -Community . Böhning-Gaese works on animal ecology, macroecology and the protection of animal communities.

Life

Katrin Böhnung-Gaese started her commitment to nature conservation and biodiversity in 1984 with a degree in biology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . She wrote her thesis on the food ecology of the white stork (C. ciconia) in Upper Swabia with the zoologist Klaus Schmidt-Koenig . With him she also did her doctorate on causes of long-term population developments of European and North American songbirds on a continental scale and graduated in 1993. From 1996 she worked as a research assistant at the RWTH Aachen in the local zoology / animal physiology within the framework of a postdoctoral fellowship. During this time she also worked at the Radolfzell Vogelwarte with Professor Berthold.

She then wrote her habilitation in zoology at the University of Tübingen with the research topic micro and macroecological approaches to understanding species communities and thus expanded her research approaches to a wider spatial macroecological scale . From 1999 to 2001 she worked as part of the Heisenberg program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen .

Since 2000 she has been a research assistant at the national museums in Kenya . From 2001 to 2010 she was C3 professor for ecology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 2010, Katrin Böhning-Gaese became Professor (W3) and Director of the BiK-F in Frankfurt am Main. Katrin Böhnung-Gaese has been Vice President of the Leibniz Association since the end of November 2017 .

Honors and memberships (selection)

Böhning-Gaese received numerous honors and funding for their projects. She has been to various universities abroad for field work and academic visits several times. She is currently working on the DFG-funded project on biodiversity on Kilimanjaro in Tanzania . From 2008 to 2016 she was a member of the Senate Commission for Biodiversity Research of the German Research Foundation . From 2011 to 2012 she was a member of the National Committee for Global Change Research. In 2015 she was elected to the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the Leopoldina .
