Kawai ( Jap. 河合町 Kawaichō ) is a city (- chō ) in the district (-gun) North Katsuragi ( Kita-Katsuragi ) of the Japanese prefecture (ken) Nara .
geography
Kawai is located in the Nara Basin in the northwest of Nara, southwest of the capital Nara and the city of [Yamato-] Kōriyama. The river (-gawa) Yamato forms the northern boundary of the municipality.
Adjacent communities of the city of Kawai are the cities of Ōji , Kanmaki , Kōryō in North Katsuragi County, the cities of Ikaruga and Ando in Ikoma County, and the cities of Kawanishi and Miyake in Shiki County.
history
The pre-modern village of Kawai ( 河合村 Kawai-mura ) in the district Hirose of Yamato Province belonged to the end of the Edo period , apart from Shrine and Temple goods to the Principality (-han) Kōriyama . After the Meiji Restoration , the district came to the prefectures (-fu / -ken) Kōriyama, Nara, Sakai and Osaka , from 1887 finally to Nara. When the modern community forms were introduced in 1889, it was combined with twelve other villages in Hirose County. In 1897 the districts of Katsujō, Katsuge, Hirose and Oshimi were reorganized as North and South Katsuragi , the Hirose district and thus also Kawai came to the former.
In the late 1960s the New Town West-Yamato ( 西 大 和 ニ ュ ー タ ウ ン Nishi-Yamato nyūtaun ) was built, in the 1970s the population of Kawai doubled. 1971 Kawai-mura became -chō.
In the Heisei territorial reform of the 2000s, Kawai and six other cities from the districts of North Katsuragi and Ikoma were to be merged to form the independent city of Seiwa ( 西 和 市 Seiwa- shi , "City of West Wa [shū] = West Yamato") ; but the citizens of Ōji and Ikaruga rejected the merger by a majority in referendums in 2004 and the plan was abandoned. Kawai's population has been declining since the 2000s.
traffic
The Tawaramoto Line of the Kinki-Japan Railway ( Kintetsu ) runs through Kawai and has three stations in the city. The western Na [goya] - [O] saka highway ( Nishi-Meihan jidōshadō ) divides the city from southwest to northeast, and the Hōryūji junction (Hōryūji interchange) is located in the northeast near Yamato-gawa .
