Keava , Scottish Gaelic Ceabhaigh , is a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides . It is located in the council area of the same name and was historically part of the traditional county of Ross-shire or the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty .

geography

Keava is located in Loch Roag Bay off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis . It is only separated from the neighboring island of Great Bernera by a 360-meter-wide waterway . Lewis is to the east at a distance of around 700 meters. On Lewis are the towns of Breasclete and Callanish Keava opposite. Eilean Kearstay is 500 meters south.

The island has a maximum length of 760 meters and a width of 440 meters. This results in an area of 25  hectares . Its highest point rises 27 meters above sea level.

history

It is possible that Keava was already settled in the Stone or Bronze Ages. This is indicated by a stone construction that could have been a former dwelling. Four cairns and a standing stone also support the assumption of an early settlement.
