Keepin 'Out of Mischief Now is a jazz track written by Fats Waller (music) and Andy Razaf (text) and published in 1932.

First successes and chart listings

Waller wrote Keepin 'Out of Mischief Now with lyrics by Razaf; Well-known songs like " Ain't Misbehavin ' " and " Honeysuckle Rose " emerged from their collaboration . Among the first musicians to record Keepin 'Out of Mischief Now since February 1932 were Isham Jones (Brunswick, with Dick Robertson, vocals), Chick Bullock (Banner), Joel Shaw (Crown, also with Dick Robertson), Louis Armstrong (Columbia / OKeh) and Art Krueger and His Columbians (Broadway Records). The song hit the US charts in the version of the Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawks Orchestra (Victor, # 20) in April of that year, followed by Armstrong's version on May 28th (# 17). Waller himself did not record his composition with the “interesting-driving rhythm ” until June 11, 1937 as a piano solo (Victor 25618) without making it into the charts.

Only in the years after Waller's recording did the title become a widely played jazz standard , but mostly as an instrumental version ; it was also interpreted by singers such as Teresa Brewer , Ella Fitzgerald , Rebecca Kilgore , Jo Stafford , Barbra Streisand and Lee Wiley . From the 1950s the title was part of the repertoire of numerous trad jazz bands and musicians, such as Vic Dickenson in the USA, Sandy Brown , Kenny Baker , Alex Welsh in England, Adrian Bentzon in Denmark and the Diksilend Ansambl [sic] 7 Miladh in Belgrade. The discographer Tom Lord lists around 400 cover versions of the title in the field of jazz (as of 2017), of which, according to Jazzstandards.com, mainly the interpretations of Fats Waller himself (1937), Louis Armstrong ( Satch Play Fats , 1955), Dave Brubeck ( Brubeck Time , 1954), Art Hodes (1988), Maxine Sullivan ( A Tribute to Andy Razaf , 1956), Ralph Sutton and Dinah Washington (1957) should be mentioned.

Folksinger Bob Dylan quoted the song title in his 2002 song "Waitin '". a. also in the soundtrack of the Woody Allen film Interiors (1978).
