The Keiō Takao Line ( Japanese 京 王 高 尾 線 , Keiō Takao-sen ) is a railway line on the Japanese island of Honshū , which is operated by the Keiō Dentetsu railway company . It is a branch line of the Keiō line in the urban area of Hachiōji in the west of Tokyo prefecture . It is named after Mount Takao .

description

A class 8000 multiple unit pulls into Yamada Station

The 8.6 km long route branches off the Keiō line in Kitano and heads west to Takaosanguchi . It is electrified with 1500 V DC and serves seven train stations, the maximum speed is 105 km / h. Like the vast majority of the lines from Keiō Dentetsu, it has the unusual gauge of 1372 mm (so-called "Scottish gauge").

The Takao Line has been laid across an embankment or in incisions , the only level crossing is at Yamada Station. Shortly after Kitano cross the Yokohama Line of JR East . At Takao station it meets the Chūō main line , but due to the different gauge there is no track connection. From here the route is single-track and leads through mountainous terrain. After two tunnels and a bridge over the Annai, you reach Takaosanguchi at the foot of the touristically important Takao mountain . There is connection to a cable car and a chairlift also of the Keio Group owned company Takao Tozan Dentetsu .

Trains

Five to seven trains per hour are offered on weekdays, with almost all of them in Kitano being routed to the subsequent Keiō line in the direction of Shinjuku or coming from there. In addition to local trains that stop at all stations, there are also numerous express trains. Due to the lively excursion traffic, the offer is somewhat larger on weekends and public holidays, with up to nine trains every hour in the early morning; The number of express trains on offer is also higher.

history

The predecessor of the Takao line is the Goryō line , which opened up the Musashi Imperial Cemetery from 1931 . In support of the rationing measures towards the end of the Pacific War , it was shut down in 1945 and then dismantled for use in other locations. Most of the route was retained. At the beginning of the 1960s, the Keio Group decided to develop new housing developments in the south of Hachiōji with a railway line. For this purpose, the Goryō line should be partially rebuilt and extended, which should also stimulate the excursion traffic to Mount Takao .

The building permit for the line was in June 1964, work began in February 1965. The opening of the Takao line took place on October 1, 1967, the section between Kitano and Yamada corresponds to the course of the earlier Goryō line. From the beginning, express trains also ran on the new line. On August 28, 2008, a train between Takao and Takaosanguchi derailed after heavy rains caused a landslide . No one was injured, but the route was interrupted for 30 days. Another interruption occurred from October 12-14 , 2019, when Typhoon Hagibis between Mejirodai and Hazama also caused a landslide.
