Keith Brown (jazz pianist)

Keith L. Brown (* around 1985 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , also double bass , composition ) of post bop .

Brown grew up in Knoxville as the son of jazz pianist Donald Ray Brown ; his mother Dorothy is also a pianist. He started playing the piano at an early age and played songs by ears, for example by Stevie Wonder . At the age of eight he received classical piano lessons. At first he played piano and bass in various local bands of different genres. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 2009 and his master’s degree in 2011.

Brown began writing his own compositions early on, influenced by Phineas Newborn Jr. , James Williams and Mulgrew Miller . A first album was made in Paris and Knoxville ( Sweet & Lovely , with Stéphane Belmondo , Baptiste Herbin , Essiet Okon Essiet and Marcus Gilmore ). In the following years he also played with Gregory Tardy ( Standards and More , 2012) and Vance Thompson's Five Plus Six ( Such Sweet Thunder , 2014), in 2019 with Charles Tolliver ( Connect ). He regularly appears at the Smalls jazz club with his own quintet, which includes Wayne Tucker, Anthony Ware, Dezron Douglas and Darrell Green , and he also performed in a duo with Steve Slagle . Brown teaches at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee.
