Keith Jeffery

Keith John Jeffery (born January 11, 1952 in Belfast , † February 12, 2016 ) was a British military historian . His main research focus was on British and Irish military history of the early 20th century. He is also the author of the widely acclaimed book MI6: The History of the Secret Intelligence Service, 1909–1949, about the beginnings of the foreign intelligence service in the 20th century.

Life

Jeffery was born in Belfast in 1952, where his father was the vice-principal of Methodist College Belfast . Later he attended the Methodist College Belfast and studied at St John's College of the University of Cambridge . He also received his doctorate there . After receiving his doctorate, he returned to Northern Ireland in 1978 and began teaching history as a lecturer at the Ulster Polytechnic in Jordanstown . When this arose in the University of Ulster , he continued teaching at the university. In 2005 he moved to Queen's University Belfast , where he taught as a professor of British history. He retired in January 2016 .

In 1988 he became one of the two co-editors of the journal Irish Historical Studies with Ciaran Brady , who taught at Trinity College Dublin . From 1997 to 1998 he was a visiting fellow at the Australian National University and the Australian Defense Academy . In 1998 he was Lecturer at Trinity College, University of Cambridge as part of the Lees Knowles Lectures . From 2003 to 2004 he was a Parnell Fellow at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. In 2009 Jeffery was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy .

In the course of his career, Jeffery gained a reputation as an internationally recognized professional in his field of research. In 2005, after giving a lecture on the subjects of intelligence, statecraft and power at the Irish Conference of Historians at Trinity College Dublin, he received the offer to write an authorized book about the beginnings of MI6 in the early 20th century. By John Scarlett time he was given access to the archives of the Foreign Intelligence Service. In 2010 MI6: The History of the Secret Intelligence Service, 1909-1949 was published . The book received widespread attention and was widely praised.

Jeffery was married and had two sons with his wife, who was a fellow student at the University of Cambridge. He died in February 2016 of cancer .
