The Martin Kelter Verlag GmbH & Co. KG (also known as Kelter Verlag ) has its headquarters in Hamburg . It mainly publishes novels and puzzle books, currently 14 magazines and until 1988 also paperbacks. Martin Kelter Verlag is a medium-sized family company owned by the Melchert family.

The company employs around 200 people who ensure a print run of around 3 million print products in over 40 countries.

For a number of years, the focus has been on “women's novels” , while the competitor Bastei-Verlag is concentrating on “men's novels”. One of the most successful titles is the doctor novel series Dr. North with more than 170 million copies sold so far. The Kelter Verlag has its own print shop, which has also been printing gold as the fifth color using the offset process since 2001 . In 1959 this brought returns from some wine press series, provided with a new cover, under their own name on the market.

Publishing history

Wine press

The publishing house was founded in Leipzig in 1938 and took over the German Literature Publishing House (DLV) in Dresden in 1941. After the publishing houses were destroyed in World War II, the company moved to Hamburg to rebuild. In 1951 he merged with “Mein Roman” and in 1955 took over the magazine “Die Gartenlaube”. In 1957 the company began to set up its own print shop (Mero-Druck). A separate distribution system was used from 1960. The publishing program was expanded in 1966 to include the printing of puzzle books. The success of the entire program was evident in 1970 when the first licensed editions abroad appeared. The publishing house continued to expand and entered the magazine market in 1985 and the adventure press in 1994 .

DLV

The Deutsche Literaturverlag was founded in Dresden in 1905. In 1941 the Kelter Verlag took it over. The publisher initially continued the paperback program (historical novels as well as romance and detective novels) from Kelter; for example, at the end of the 1980s, three of the Ren Dhark paperbacks from Kelter Verlag were reissued. The paperback series was discontinued at the end of the 1980s. In the 1990s, two series of love novels were published for a short time.

In the 1990s, the two publishers had a joint booth at book fairs.

My novel

In 1948 Otto Melchert, who managed the merged publishing house until his accidental death in 2000, founded the publishing house. It was the first publisher to bring magazine novels to the magazine trade after the war. In 1951 the publishing house merged with the Kelter publishing house.

Booklet novel / pocket book series

The series Der Bergpfarrer was used as a template for several television films.

Men's novels

The series David Johnson and Roberta Lee were continued with novels that had already been purchased but no longer appeared in the independent series. The series appeared in an unusual 4-week rhythm.
