Kentwood is a city in Kent County in the state of Michigan in the United States and the third largest city in the county with a population of about 45,000.

geography

Kentwood is a suburb of the adjacent Grand Rapids to the north . It is bordered by Cascade Township to the east, Gaines Township to the southeast, Cutlerville to the southwest and Wyoming to the west .

history

The village was founded in 1839 by Joel Guild. It was named Paris Township , named after Guild's previous residence in Paris , New York . In 1967 the settlement acquired town charter and was renamed Kentwood, after the lawyer James Kent , who is also eponymous for the county.

Demographics

According to the United States Census 2000 , 45,255 residents lived in 18,477 households. The median age was 32.4 years. The population was made up of 80.9% white, 9.1% black and 5.6% Asian. The unemployment rate was 2.9%, the average household income 45 812 dollars a year.

Economy and Infrastructure

Several bus routes connect Kentwood to Grand Rapids and other surrounding areas. East of the city is the Gerald R. Ford International Airport , which offers flights to 15 airports in the USA and to Toronto . The city also has access to Interstate 96 and the Michigan Highways M-6, M-11 and M-37.

The Kenwood School District's public schools include eleven elementary schools , three middle schools and three high schools with a total of approximately 8,800 students.
