The Chooz nuclear power plant is located in France in the municipality of Chooz on the Meuse . It has three pressurized water reactors , one decommissioned by Westinghouse and two in operation of the French type N4 . The power plant operator is EDF .

The power station is 3 kilometers from the Belgian border, between the French city of Charleville-Mézières and the Belgian municipality of Dinant . In the main wind direction there are German cities Koblenz (200 km), Wiesbaden / Mainz (245 km) and Frankfurt (270 km); Aachen (northeast) is 115 km, Cologne (northeast) is 180 km and Trier (east-southeast) is 137 km away.

The first reactor on site was Chooz A , an underground pressurized water reactor from Westinghouse. The block was decommissioned in 1991 and has been dismantled since 2008.

There are two units in operation, each with 1,500  MW electrical output: Chooz B1 and Chooz B2 . The two blocks are of type N4 from the manufacturer Framatome ANP. Construction work on Chooz B1 began on January 1, 1984, grid connection was on August 30, 1996 and commercial power operation began on May 15, 2000. Construction work on Chooz B2 began on December 31, 1985, connection was on April 10, 1997 and Commercial power operation began on September 29, 2000. In terms of net output, they are the two most powerful units in the world after the Taishan nuclear power plant in China , and in terms of gross output of 1560 MW each, they are the third largest in the world after the Civaux nuclear power plant .

About 700 people are employed in Chooz. The Double Chooz experiment has been operated at the site since 2009 .

Disruptions

In 2004, three level 1 incidents were recorded on the International Nuclear Events Rating Scale (INES).
