The Golfech nuclear power plant is located in the municipality of Golfech ( Département Tarn-et-Garonne ) in southwest France on the banks of the Garonne between Toulouse and Agen , opposite the Arrats estuary and below the Tarn estuary . The owner and operator company is Électricité de France (EDF).

The power plant consists of two pressurized water reactors with an electrical output of 1,310  MW each , which were put into operation in 1991 and 1994. The power plant is equipped with two natural draft cooling towers, which with a height of over 170 meters are among the highest cooling towers in Europe and allow a closed cooling circuit. This is necessary because the Garonne river, on which the power plant was built, does not provide enough water for cooling, especially in summer. The water withdrawal from the Garonne only serves to compensate for the loss due to evaporation and to cool the additional circuits of the safety devices.

In 2008, the power plant produced 17.1 billion kWh (17.1 TWh) of electricity, which corresponds to 100% coverage of the annual electricity demand of the Midi-Pyrénées region . Around 650 people are employed in the plant, which was originally planned with four blocks.
