The Penly nuclear power station is located about 15 kilometers from Dieppe at Penly in the French commune of Petit-Caux in the region Normandy in Seine-Maritime at the English Channel , is drawn out of the water for cooling. The nuclear power plant is operated by the French public company Électricité de France (EDF), which employs around 670 people there.

The two pressurized water reactors have a net power of each of 1330  megawatts (MW) and a gross power of 1382 MW.

The total installed capacity is 2764 MW; this makes the nuclear power plant one of the middle ones in France. Every year it feeds an average of 18 billion kilowatt hours into the public power grid ; this corresponds to around 80 percent of Normandy's annual electricity consumption .

history

Construction on the first reactor block began on September 1, 1982 and went into operation on May 4, 1990. Construction of the second reactor block began on August 1, 1984, and commissioning was on February 4, 1992.

According to a report by the nuclear safety authority ASN from October 2002, the functionality of a safety-relevant valve , which is supposed to ensure the cooling of the reactor blocks, could not be ensured in the event of a strong earthquake .

In January 2009 the French government confirmed that a third EPR reactor with around 1650 MW should go into construction in 2012 at the Penly site . Shortly after his election as French president, François Hollande announced that he did not want to block the construction of an EPR in Penly. According to the French Minister of Industry, Arnaud Montebourg, according to an interview in February 2013, the EPR in Penly is superfluous because there is enough capacity due to the strong expansion of renewable energies. Environment Minister Delphine Batho had already made a similar statement in July 2012 .

Incidents

On April 5, 2012, a fire broke out in Unit 2 of the nuclear power plant, whereupon the unit was shut down. The reason for the two sources of fire extinguished by the fire brigade was leaking oil from a pump in the cooling circuit. There were no injuries and, according to the operating company EDF, no environmental impact.

It later became known that the accident had also resulted in a significant leak in the primary cooling circuit. About 2.3 m³ of radioactively contaminated water per hour leaked. To ensure the cooling of the reactor core, additional cooling water was pumped into the cooling circuit. Towards evening the water loss could be reduced to 100 liters per hour. According to the operator, the contaminated water was collected in the reactor building. In the early morning of April 6, 2012, the leak was closed and the leakage of contaminated water stopped. The incident was rated 1 (anomaly) on the International Nuclear Event Rating Scale .
