Systematics and distribution

Molecular genetic studies showed that the Molluginaceae family was polyphyletic to the old extent. Some genera were spun off into the families Caryophyllaceae, Limeaceae, Lophiocarpaceae, Microteaceae, for example. The species that have been placed in the genus Kewa since 2014 were previously placed in the Molluginaceae family . However, this turned out to be not monophyletic. By separating the genus Macarthuria into a separate family of Macarthuriaceae and some species of the previous genus Hypertelis , the uniformity of the family Molluginaceae could be restored. Maarten Joost Maria Christenhusz et al. In 2014, the species that do not fit into the clade of Hypertelis were placed in their own genus Kewa Christenh. and this into a newly created family Kewaceae Christenh in 2014 . . The generic name Kewa originated from the name of the Kew district of London, in which the Royal Botanic Gardens are one of the botanical centers in the world.

The position of the genus Kewa , as the only genus of the Kewaceae family within the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales) was confirmed by APG IV 2016.

The Kewa species come from southern Ethiopia through southwestern Angola, Kenya, Tanzania and southern Mozambique to southern Africa , Madagascar and St. Helena .

The genus Kewa comprised eight species in 2014, since 2018 there are only six:

  • Kewa acida (Hook. F.) Christenh. (Syn .: Pharnaceum acidum Hook. F. , Hypertelis acida (Hook. F.) K.Müll. ): This endemic occurs only in southern and southeastern St. Helena.
  • Kewa angrae-pequenae (Friedrich) Christenh. : It occurs from Namibia to the Western Cape.
  • Kewa arenicola (Sond.) Christenh. (Syn .: Kewa trachysperma (Adamson) Christenh. ): It occurs in southern and western South Africa.
  • Kewa bowkeriana (Sond.) Christenh. ( Kewa suffruticosa (Adamson) Christenh. ): It occurs from southern Ethiopia to southern Africa and Madagascar .
  • Kewa caespitosa (Friedrich) Christenh. : It occurs in Namibia and in the Free State .
  • Kewa salsoloides (Burch.) Christenh. (Syn .: Pharnaceum salsoloides Burchell , Pharnaceum verrucosum Ecklon & Zeyher , Hypertelis salsoloides (Burch.) Adamson , Hypertelis verrucosa (Ecklon & Zeyher) Fenzl ): It occurs from southern Mozambique and southwestern Angola via Namibia to South Africa.
